Children’s Day: Celebrating Childhood, Nurturing the Future
Children’s Day also called “Bal Diwas” is celebrated on the 14th of November, every year. The day celebrates the birth anniversary of India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who is lovingly called Chacha Nehru. Nehru was very attached to children and believed that they were the future of the nation. He strongly supported children’s education and rights. Moreover, he believed that, apart from which background they come from, every child deserves the right to equal education. Nehru believed that the nation can only grow when the child receives a proper education. In this blog, we will explore the several reasons why Children’s Day is celebrated, different ways to celebrate Children’s Day, and a few wishes to wish your kids an amazing and happy Children’s Day.
When is Children’s Day
Children’s Day in 2024 will be celebrated on November 14. This day is a tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, who was known for his deep love for children. Afterward, he even established the Children’s Film Society of India in 1955 to promote films for kids. Therefore, Children’s Day is celebrated on Nehru’s birthday to honor his efforts for children’s rights and his push for an inclusive education system, making learning accessible to every child.
Interesting Fact: Besides November 14, there are other notable days for children. June 1 is International Children’s Day, and November 20 is World Children’s Day!
When is Children’s Day
In the very beginning, Children’s Day used to be celebrated as “Flower Day” and was held on the 5th of November, in the year 1948. Moreover, the Indian Council of Child Welfare (ICCW) established this day to collect funds for UNAC by selling flower tokens on this day. Later Children’s Day used to be celebrated on the 20th of November when World Children’s Day was celebrated. However, after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, the parliament decided to celebrate Children’s Day on 14 November to remember Jawahar Nehru.
Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, was born on November 14, 1889, into a Kashmiri Brahman family known for their scholarship and leadership. In the early 18th century his family migrated from Kashmir to Delhi. Additionally, under Gandhi’s guidance, Nehru played a key role in India’s independence movement in 1947. Subsequently, after his death in 1964, India’s parliament declared his birthday, November 14, as the official date for Children’s Day. Before 1956, Children’s Day was celebrated on November 20, aligning with Universal Children’s Day, which was declared by the UN in 1954.
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was often called as “Chacha Nehru” by children as he loved childrens and believed that children were the future of the nation. However, there is another story that says that he was called “Chacha” because of his close relation with Gandhi, whom all referred as “Bapu”. Because Nehru Ji was like a brother to Mahatma Gandhi.
