Significance of celebrating Guru Nanak Jayanti 2024

The word “Gurpurab” is a combination of the words, “Gur,” which comes from the meaning of Guru, and “Purab,” which was the day or festival. It was the first Sikh Guru’s birthday, that of Guru Nanak, who was the first Gurpurab.

Guru Nanak travelled throughout his life with the message of love, compassion, and unity but refused any rituals or idol worship except praying and meditating to get connected to God. He also encouraged equality among all people, opposing caste differences.

Before he died in 1539, Guru Nanak nominated his successor Guru Angad, starting the tradition of Sikh Gurus. They eventually developed the Guru Granth Sahib, which is the holy scripture of Sikhism.

Why is Gurpurab Important?

This is a day to pay respect to the values followed by Guru Nanak Dev Ji, and it is a great moment for Sikhs and others to reflect on how his teachings can bring harmony to today’s world. Equality, love, and spirituality build the communities stronger and help make the world better. It reminds everyone to live with humility, compassion, and love toward all beings.

How to Celebrate Gurpurab ?

  • Akhand Path

The celebrations usually start two days early by continuously reading the Guru Granth Sahib known as the Akhand Path. Devotees gather to listen, reflect, and immerse themselves in the words and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the other Sikh Gurus.

  • Prabhat Pheris

For three days before Gurpurab, Prabhat Pheris - morning processions take place. Devotees go from door to door singing hymns and spreading the message of happiness. All these processions will build up the excitement as well as unite communities around the main day of celebration.

  • Nagar Kirtan

A grand Nagar Kirtan is planned a day or two before the Gurpurab. The Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs, is taken out on the streets along with kirtan, music, and chanting sounds. Thousands of people walk in the Nagar Kirtan with flags, swords, and banners in their hands. Young Sikhs perform Gatka, the traditional martial art form, to demonstrate their bravery and skills.

  • Kirtan and Prayers in the Gurdwara

People visit gurdwaras to listen to kirtan prayers and listen to the teachings of Guru Nanak ji, on this special day. With devotion and respect and gratitude, people praise Guru Nanak Dev Ji for their guidance.

  • Distributing Langar

One of the most significant aspects of Gurpurab is that the gurdwara organizes free langar on this special day. Langar shows Guru Nanak’s teaching about equality where people prepare, cook, and serve food, regardless of one’s background. Langar breaks down the social barriers and allows people to connect with each other and share each other with true unity.

  • Lighting and Decorations

Gurdwaras and houses are decorated with candles, diyas (oil lamps), and lights that create a festive aura in the entire celebration. In many places, fireworks displays are also carried out to commemorate the happiness of Gurpurab.
