World Turtle Day 2023: History

The American Tortoise Rescue Organization proposed the celebration of World Turtle Day in order to raise awareness and protect turtles and tortoises around the world. The organization was founded by a husband and wife named Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson in Malibu, California in 1990. Since 2001 World Turtle Day has been celebrated on 23rd May, each year in different countries

Why Do We Celebrate Turtle Day?

Turtles are very important creatures for the marine environment as they help in controlling the population of sponges, jellyfish, and the length of the seagrass. Due to climate change, population, and artificial lighting, the population of turtles is gradually decreasing, and to educate people about their importance World Turtles Day is celebrated.
