History of India's Independence Day

In 1757, the British started to rule in India. For over 200 years, India was under British rule. Many things were happening in between such as they had limited rights, had to pay unfair taxes, and felt as if they were being controlled by another nation in their own country. Many brave Indians felt this wasn’t right. They dreamed of a free India, where they could be in control of themselves and form their own destiny. Many amazing people came out as leaders in the fight for independence. Finally during World War I the Indian independence movement started, Mahatma Gandhi, known as the “Father of the Nation,” led a movement based on non-violence.
However, other heroes like Bhagat Singh, Rani Lakshmibai, and Subhash Chandra Bose used different methods. Some spoke out boldly, some organized protests, and some even fought back with arms. Each played a crucial role in keeping the spirit of freedom alive.
However, not all British rulers were bad. Some grew to love India and did great things for it, even supporting the Indian independence struggle. For example, Warren Hastings developed court reforms, Allan Octavian Hume started the Indian National Congress, and Freda Bedy supported Indian nationalism.
The struggle for independence wasn’t easy. It involved sacrifices, hardships, and consistent determination. Finally, on 15th August 1947, India achieved its long-awaited freedom. On the night of August 14th, the very first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, raised the Indian flag at the Red Fort in Delhi to honor the celebrations. This marked the birth of a free and independent India.
