The Story of Lord Krishna's Birth

Lord Krishna was born over 5,000 years ago in Mathura, a town in northern India. Furthermore, Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in a prison where they were locked by Devaki’s brother. However at that time, the evil king Kansa, who was Devaki’s brother, ruled Mathura. A prophecy warned Kansa that Devaki’s eighth son would be the reason for his death. For that reason, he imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva and killed their first six children. They amazingly transferred the seventh child, Balarama, to the womb of Rohini, another wife of Vasudeva.   

When Krishna was born, the prison cell was magically opened, and Vasudeva carried the newborn across the Yamuna River to Gokul, where he left Krishna in the care of Yashoda and Nanda. Stories of Krishna’s divine playfulness and magical deeds fill his life in Gokul and later in Vrindavan.

How Janmashtami is Celebrated

Presently, Janmashtami is celebrated in different ways in different regions of India. below, we have listed some of the key events held on Janmashtami:

  • Fasting

    On Janmashtami, some people keep a fast and break it at midnight, the time when they believe Krishna was born. Additionally, special foods that Krishna loved, like butter, milk, and sweets, are prepared. After the midnight prayers, devotees enjoy a feast.

Additionally, teams of young men and boys form human pyramids to reach and break the pot, showing Krishna’s love for butter and his playful nature of stealing it from the gopis.

  • Raslila and Dramas

    In the northern states of India, especially in Vrindavan and Mathura, the dramas and Raslila based on Krishna’s life are performed. However, These plays highlight his playful and loving nature, including his playful activities with the gopis, his battle with the demon Kansa, and his role in the epic Mahabharata.

  • Temple Visits and Pooja

    Devotees visit temples dedicated to Krishna, such as the Krishna Janmasthan Temple in Mathura and the Dwarkadhish Temple in Dwarka. Moreover, special poojas and bhajans are played, and the temples are decorated with flowers, lights, and rangoli.
